Macrophone

Guide

Voice to clipboard on your Mac

Say it on your phone, paste it on your Mac. Macrophone puts every dictation on your Mac’s clipboard by default, so it works with every app, including the ones that don’t support dictation well.

How it works#

  1. Tap the mic in Macrophone on your iPhone and talk. Tap again to stop, or press and hold to talk.
  2. The iPhone transcribes what you said and, if cleanup is on, tidies it up.
  3. The text is copied to your Mac's clipboard, and a small panel under the menu bar shows what arrived.
  4. Press ⌘ V wherever you want it.

Choose how it arrives#

Delivery modeBest for
Clipboard + notification (default)Seeing what arrived before you paste.
Clipboard onlyStaying out of the way. The text is just there when you press ⌘V.
Auto-pasteSkipping the paste. Macrophone pastes into the app you’re using, then puts your previous clipboard back.

Auto-paste needs Accessibility permission, which macOS asks for when you turn it on. Macrophone never pastes into password fields.

Why use your phone instead of the Mac’s dictation#

  • Away from the keyboard. The microphone is in your hand, so you can talk from anywhere in the room.
  • Works with every app. The clipboard is universal: terminals, web apps, remote desktops and anything else where dictation doesn't type well.
  • Raw and cleaned. Both versions are kept in the history on your phone and on your Mac, so you can paste the exact words or the tidy ones.
  • Nothing gets lost. If your Mac is asleep, the phone queues the dictation and copies it over when the Mac is back.

From the terminal#

The command-line tool reads your dictations directly, which is handy when the clipboard already holds something you need:

Terminal
mp # print the latest dictation
mp wait | pbcopy # wait for the next one, then copy it
mp list -n 5 # the last five

More in the command-line docs.

Private by default#

Speech is transcribed on your iPhone and no audio is kept. The text goes straight to your Mac over your local network, encrypted with a key created when you paired, with no account and no server. The history stays on each device, and you can clear it or turn it off. Privacy policy.

Try it#

Macrophone is free on both sides. Install the iPhone app, download the Mac app, and pair them once by scanning a QR code.
